In French, a vineyard surrounded by a wall-either to deter theft or to protect the vines from the elements-is termed a "clos." With our Clos de Cal Zinfandel we decided to think of the entire state of California as one "walled vineyard." While we acknowledge that different California regions have their own unique character, our beloved home state as a whole has its own unique character as well. And what better way to express that character than with California's own adopted "national" grape, Zinfandel? With Clos de Cal we sought to produce a more restrained style that, while still fruit-forward, is not jammy or extracted. It's California Zin how we used to make it.
